In numerous traditional medicinal systems for centuries, the leaves of Morus alba Linn., which is also known as white mulberry, have been a common remedy. Due to its abundance of bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, and polysaccharides, mulberry leaf is a prominent component in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating diabetes. However, the different habitats of the mulberry plant lead to a fluctuating nature of the components. Thus, a substance's geographical origin is an essential element, closely related to its bioactive compound makeup, which further dictates its medicinal attributes and effects. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), a cost-effective and non-invasive technique, can produce comprehensive chemical profiles of medicinal plants, facilitating rapid determination of their geographical origins. To conduct this study, mulberry leaves were procured from five exemplary provinces in China, including Anhui, Guangdong, Hebei, Henan, and Jiangsu. Through the implementation of SERS spectroscopy, the specific spectral markers of mulberry leaf extracts in both ethanol and water were investigated. Mulberry leaves from various geographic areas were successfully differentiated based on their SERS spectra, employing machine learning algorithms; the deep learning algorithm, the convolutional neural network (CNN), performed best in this classification task. Our research, integrating SERS spectra with machine learning algorithms, established a novel approach for determining the geographic origin of mulberry leaves. This innovative methodology holds significant implications for the quality control, assessment, and certification of mulberry leaf products.
The application of veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) to animals raised for food purposes may result in the presence of residues in the subsequent food products, including, for example, residues within various foodstuffs. There is potential for adverse health consequences associated with eggs, meat, milk, or honey consumption. Safe limits for VMP residues are universally established through regulatory concepts, such as tolerances in the US and maximum residue limits (MRLs) used in the EU, ensuring consumer safety. In accordance with these boundaries, withdrawal periods (WP) are calculated. To ensure a specified minimum interval, a WP dictates the timeframe between the final VMP administration and the marketing of food products. The customary approach to estimating WPs involves regression analysis, grounded in insights from residue studies. The statistical confidence, usually 95% within the EU and 99% within the US, dictates that residues from almost all treated animals (around 95%) fall below the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) prior to the harvesting of edible produce. While uncertainties from sampling and biological variation are acknowledged, the uncertainties associated with the measurement procedures of the analytical tests are not systematically integrated. The simulation experiment presented in this paper investigates the effect of measurement uncertainties, specifically accuracy and precision, on the time taken by WPs. Artificially 'contaminated' real residue depletion data was affected by measurement uncertainty within permitted accuracy and precision ranges. The results show that the overall WP was significantly affected by the levels of both accuracy and precision. A comprehensive analysis of measurement uncertainty sources will strengthen, improve the quality, and ensure the dependability of the calculations upon which regulatory decisions regarding consumer safety concerning residue levels are predicated.

While mental health interventions for individuals with HIV (PLWH) have utilized various strategies, the detailed implementation of these approaches in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), a region carrying the largest HIV burden globally, remains underexplored. In this study, we explore mental health services tailored to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), irrespective of publication's date or linguistic form. Progress on HIV testing, treatment, and prevention in sub-Saharan Africa, while substantial, faces a persistent challenge in the engagement and retention of males in HIV care programs. To understand how men's reproductive goals in rural South Africa could guide HIV care and prevention strategies, we conducted in-depth interviews with 25 HIV-positive men (MWH). By analyzing the themes presented by men, HIV care, treatment, and prevention opportunities and obstacles, relating to their reproductive goals were identified and examined at the individual, couple, and community levels. Men strive to maintain their health so they can successfully raise a healthy child. When considering couples, the importance of a healthy partnership in raising children may lead to the disclosure of serostatus, promote testing, and encourage male support in providing their partners with HIV prevention resources. Men in the community frequently stated that being perceived as supportive fathers, providing for their families, was a significant driver for their involvement in caregiving. Men expressed hindrances, encompassing a shortage of information concerning antiretroviral-based HIV prevention methods, a deficiency in trust among partners, and the burden of community bias. Addressing the reproductive health concerns of men who have sex with men (MWH) might constitute an untapped strategy to encourage male engagement in HIV care and prevention activities, thus protecting the well-being of their partners.
